Degas returned to the racetrack throughout his career, and ‘At the Races’ is a generic title applied by print retailers to this recurring subject rather than the name of one specific catalogued canvas; it evokes early racing scenes such as At the Races in the Countryside (1869, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston), where spectators and a carriage occupy the foreground while horses run in the distance. Across the series, Degas treated the racecourse less as sporting spectacle than as another stage for studying bodies, silhouettes, and the unexpected croppings he was also exploring through photography.
