About this painting
Old Man with a Gold Chain is a half-length portrait, traditionally identified as a portrait of Rembrandt's father Harmen Gerritsz van Rijn, painted around 1631. The sitter wears a dark purple cloak, a gold chain and medallion, a steel gorget, a pearl earring, and a broad-brimmed hat trimmed with ostrich feathers. The painting is held by the Art Institute of Chicago; a copy by Sedelmeyer was mistaken for the original until 1914, and its provenance includes London auction sales in 1886 and 1902.
