About this painting
The Temptation of St. Anthony is a 1946 oil-on-canvas painting by Salvador Dalí, held in the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels. It depicts Saint Anthony kneeling in a desert landscape, holding a cross against an advancing procession of elephants with spindly, elongated legs carrying symbolic temptations, led by a rearing horse. Dalí created the work for a contest held by film producers David L. Loew and Albert Lewin to select a temptation painting for the film The Private Affairs of Bel Ami; Max Ernst's entry was chosen instead. The painting is considered an early work of Dalí's 'classical period.'
