About this painting
This devotional panel, dated to around 1490 and held by the Cleveland Museum of Art, shows the Virgin Mary with the infant Christ and the young John the Baptist, a pairing popular in Florentine households since John was the city's patron saint. Cleveland catalogs the work as by Botticelli and his workshop, and scholars have long debated how much of the execution belongs to the master himself versus his pupil Filippino Lippi. The painting later gained wide public recognition when the United States Postal Service reproduced it on a 2008 Christmas postage stamp.
