About this painting
This portrait, painted in the 1470s and now in London's Victoria and Albert Museum, depicts a Florentine woman identified by an inscription on the windowsill as Smeralda Bandinelli, wife of Viviano Bandinelli and grandmother of the sculptor Baccio Bandinelli. Shown at a window in three-quarter view with one hand resting on the frame, she meets the viewer's gaze directly rather than looking demurely downward, an unusual choice for female portraiture of the period that some scholars connect to the window imagery of Dante's Vita Nuova. It remains one of Botticelli's earliest surviving individual portraits.
