- Small / desk & shelf scale (around 12x24 to 16x24 inch): Great above a desk, nightstand, or as part of a gallery wall grouping with other pieces.

About this painting
This profile portrait, painted around 1480 and held by Frankfurt's Städel Museum, presents an idealized young woman with elaborately braided hair and an invented antique-style cameo, long associated with Simonetta Vespucci, the celebrated Florentine beauty who died in 1476 and was later mythologized in Medici-circle poetry as a nymph. Rather than a literal likeness, it belongs to Botticelli's series of "ideal beauty" portraits developed from a type pioneered by his teacher Andrea del Verrocchio, using invented classical jewelry to evoke virtue rather than record an individual's features. Related versions of the type exist in London, Berlin, and Tokyo, underscoring how popular this idealized portrait format became in Botticelli's workshop.
