About this painting
The Fountain of Vaucluse is an 1841 oil painting Thomas Cole made after his second European trip, depicting the dramatic gorge and spring in southern France once home to the medieval poet Petrarch. Cole deliberately narrowed and heightened the real canyon walls to intensify the composition's sense of the sublime, using the site's literary associations to add a layer of poetic meaning to the landscape. The painting is held in the collection of the Dallas Museum of Art.
