About this painting
Hollywood is a painting Thomas Hart Benton completed in 1937 after Life magazine sponsored a trip for him to visit the film studios of Los Angeles. The canvas compresses the machinery of moviemaking into one crowded, theatrical tableau centered on a glamorous blonde starlet under floodlights, widely read as an allusion to Kansas City-born actress Jean Harlow, surrounded by cameras, klieg lights, and a chaotic backdrop referencing the 1937 musical 'In Old Chicago.' Benton used the visit and the resulting painting to needle Hollywood's manufactured spectacle even as its visual energy plainly fascinated him. The work has remained in the collection of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, not far from Benton's own longtime home and studio.
