- Small / desk & shelf scale (around 12x24 to 16x24 inch): Great above a desk, nightstand, or as part of a gallery wall grouping with other pieces.
- Medium (around 16x36 to 24x36 inch): A strong single statement piece above a sofa, bed, or dining table when paired with the furniture below it.
- Larger formats: Where offered, these work best as the focal point of a room with 8+ ft ceilings or a long wall.
As a rule of thumb, wall art should span roughly two-thirds the width of the furniture it hangs above (for example, over a 6 ft sofa, look for a piece 4-5 ft wide, or a grouped arrangement that adds up to that width).

About this painting
Joplin at the Turn of the Century is Thomas Hart Benton's final mural, completed in 1972 for the centennial of Joplin, Missouri, a city where Benton had spent part of his boyhood. The roughly 14-by-5.5-foot oil mural gathers townspeople from different walks of life along Joplin's Main Street around 1900, when the city's lead and zinc mining boom was reshaping it. Benton had vowed years earlier never to accept another mural commission but relented when the Joplin city council approached him; a documentary crew filmed him at work, and the film premiered alongside the mural's unveiling in March 1973, months after the 82-year-old artist's death. It now hangs in Joplin City Hall, having been relocated there from its original building in 2005.
