About this painting
Rice Threshing is a small 1944 painting in which Thomas Hart Benton depicted field laborers separating grain from rice plants by hand, the undulating lines of the land and clouds echoing the workers' motion in a composition typical of his rhythmic style. Benton described the piece as a preliminary study for a larger rice-threshing picture he painted for the National City Bank of New York, and he considered the old-fashioned hand-threshing process historically significant even as mechanization was already transforming American rice agriculture. The work exemplifies Benton's lifelong habit of working out mural-scale compositions through small, fluidly painted studies.
