- Small / desk & shelf scale (around 12x24 to 16x24 inch): Great above a desk, nightstand, or as part of a gallery wall grouping with other pieces.
- Medium (around 16x36 to 24x36 inch): A strong single statement piece above a sofa, bed, or dining table when paired with the furniture below it.
- Larger formats: Where offered, these work best as the focal point of a room with 8+ ft ceilings or a long wall.
As a rule of thumb, wall art should span roughly two-thirds the width of the furniture it hangs above (for example, over a 6 ft sofa, look for a piece 4-5 ft wide, or a grouped arrangement that adds up to that width).

About this painting
The Kentuckian is a 1954 painting Thomas Hart Benton created as promotional artwork for the Burt Lancaster film of the same name, depicting the frontiersman Big Eli Wakefield and his young son arriving at a backwoods settlement. Lancaster, who starred in and directed the film, championed Benton for the commission; the finished canvas debuted at the movie's Washington, D.C. premiere and was later adapted for whiskey packaging. Lancaster kept the painting in his private collection for over two decades before donating it to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 1978, marking its first public exhibition in decades. The commission reflects Benton's late-career engagement with popular film, echoing an earlier Life magazine-sponsored trip to Hollywood that had already drawn him toward cinematic subject matter.
