About this painting
The Lost Hunting Ground, painted in 1927-28, was the final panel Thomas Hart Benton completed for his unfinished 'American Historical Epic,' an ambitious mural cycle intended to retell U.S. history from the perspective of ordinary people rather than official heroes. The panel depicts a confrontation between Native Americans and European settlers, with the settlers rendered as physically larger and more muscular than the Indigenous figures they displace — an imbalance likely meant as commentary on the era's violent conquest of Native land, painted only a few years after Native Americans had been granted U.S. citizenship in 1924. Museum educators today present the painting alongside contextual discussion, since its imagery can otherwise reinforce romanticized, 'vanishing American' stereotypes of Native peoples rather than the critique Benton appears to have intended.
