About this painting
Improvisation 31 (Sea Battle) is an oil on canvas Kandinsky completed in 1913. Although the composition reads as largely abstract, it depicts a naval battle, with sailing vessels, slender masts, turbulent waves, and the outline of a city with white towers discernible within the forms. Kandinsky said such works were a largely unconscious, spontaneous expression of inner character rather than a depiction of a specific event. The painting is held in the collection of the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.
