About this painting
Improvisation No. 30 (Cannons) is an oil on canvas Kandinsky completed in 1913 as part of his Improvisations series, which he described as spontaneous, largely unconscious expressions of inner experience. Kandinsky told the Chicago collector Arthur Jerome Eddy that while the cannons in the painting could be explained by the constant war talk of that year, the work's true content is what the viewer experiences through its forms and color combinations. Eddy acquired the painting, likely directly from the artist, and it entered the Art Institute of Chicago's collection in 1931 as part of the Arthur Jerome Eddy Memorial Collection.
