About this painting
Autumn Effect at Argenteuil is an 1873 oil-on-canvas painting by Claude Monet showing the Seine river and the town of Argenteuil in autumn, painted from Monet's studio boat. The Courtauld Gallery notes that Monet rendered the water in thick parallel brushstrokes and scratched into the wet paint with the handle of his brush for added texture. When exhibited in London in the 1880s, critics highlighted the freshness and vibrancy of its colour. The painting is held in the collection of The Courtauld, London (Samuel Courtauld Trust).
