About this painting
Catalogued by the National Gallery, London as Lavacourt under Snow, this oil painting was made by Claude Monet around 1878-81 while he lived nearby at Vetheuil, and likely dates from the severe winter of 1879-80 when the Seine froze over. It shows the hamlet of Lavacourt across the river, with a broad bank of snow in the foreground and the green river separating it from the houses beyond. The museum notes the cool shadowed foreground gives way to pink tones across the water, suggesting pale sunlight breaking through.
