About this painting
"Bow River Falls, Canadian Rockies" points to Bierstadt's 1881 trip through the Canadian Rockies, made at the invitation of the Canadian Pacific Railway as it pushed westward, during which he sketched the Bow River valley near what is now Banff. No museum catalogue independently documents a finished painting under this exact title, so it cannot be confirmed as distinct from his other Canadian Rockies studies from the same trip. It would depict the milky turquoise water characteristic of the Bow River set against forested slopes and distant peaks.
