About this painting
Indians Spear Fishing is an 1862 oil painting by Albert Bierstadt depicting Native fishermen spearing fish from canoes and rocky riverbanks, a subject drawn from accounts and sketches of Native fishing practices Bierstadt encountered on his 1859 western expedition. Painted relatively early in his career, before his largest "Great Picture" canvases, it shows his developing command of reflected evening light on moving water. The painting is held in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
