About this painting
Mount Brewer is a peak in the southern Sierra Nevada, named for William Brewer of the 1860s California Geological Survey, in what is now Kings Canyon National Park. Bierstadt made repeated trips to the Sierra Nevada and painted its high peaks and canyons, but no museum record independently documents a specific painting titled "Mount Brewer from Kings River Canyon," so this cannot be confirmed as a distinct, catalogued work. If genuine, it would likely date from one of his later California trips of the 1870s or 1880s, after the canyon's dramatic scenery had been publicized by the state survey.
