- Small / desk & shelf scale (around 12x24 to 16x24 inch): Great above a desk, nightstand, or as part of a gallery wall grouping with other pieces.

As a rule of thumb, wall art should span roughly two-thirds the width of the furniture it hangs above (for example, over a 6 ft sofa, look for a piece 4-5 ft wide, or a grouped arrangement that adds up to that width).

About this painting
Horses in a Meadow is dated by some sources to 1871, an early example of Degas's lifelong interest in horses observed at rest rather than mid-race — animals grazing or standing in open pasture, studied with the same close attention to anatomy and gesture he brought to dancers. Records of the exact painting are inconsistent across sources, and Degas separately made a print of a similar subject in the early 1890s, so this bio should be read as describing the general subject rather than one confirmed, individually catalogued work. Throughout his career, horses gave Degas a non-human subject through which to study movement, weight, and balance.
