About this painting
Coquelicots (known in English as The Poppy Field near Argenteuil, Poppies, or Wild Poppies near Argenteuil) shows a mother and child walking through a poppy field near Argenteuil, where Monet lived from 1871 to 1878, with a second figure pair placed further back to establish the painting's diagonal composition. Painted in oil on canvas in 1873, it was shown at the first Impressionist exhibition in 1874 at photographer Nadar's former studio. The Musée d'Orsay, which has held the painting since Étienne Moreau-Nélaton's 1906 donation to the French state, describes it as built from two distinct colour zones, one dominated by red and the other by bluish green.
