About this painting
View from Mount Holyoke, Northampton, Massachusetts, after a Thunderstorm — known as The Oxbow — is an 1836 oil painting in which Thomas Cole split the canvas between a wild, storm-darkened wilderness on the left and the cultivated, sunlit Connecticut River valley on the right, its famous oxbow bend curving below. Painted for exhibition at the National Academy of Design, it is considered a landmark of American landscape painting for its explicit debate between untamed nature and agricultural civilization, a tension central to Cole's work as founder of the Hudson River School. The painting is held in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
