About this painting
The Birth of Saint John the Baptist sets the biblical nativity scene in a warmly lit domestic interior, focusing not on any miraculous event but on the women, maidservants, and neighbors gathered to tend the newborn and his mother Elizabeth. Artemisia Gentileschi painted it between 1633 and 1635 as one of six canvases on the life of John the Baptist commissioned for a hermitage at the Buen Retiro palace in Madrid, a project she shared with fellow painters Massimo Stanzione and Paolo Finoglia. It has been in the Museo del Prado's collection since the eighteenth century and shows the strong influence of Caravaggio and Simon Vouet on her mature Neapolitan style.
