- Small / desk & shelf scale (around 12x24 to 16x24 inch): Great above a desk, nightstand, or as part of a gallery wall grouping with other pieces.
- Medium (around 16x36 to 24x36 inch): A strong single statement piece above a sofa, bed, or dining table when paired with the furniture below it.

As a rule of thumb, wall art should span roughly two-thirds the width of the furniture it hangs above (for example, over a 6 ft sofa, look for a piece 4-5 ft wide, or a grouped arrangement that adds up to that width).

About this painting
This canvas shows two tormentors pressing a crown of thorns onto Christ's bowed head with wooden staves while a third figure, often identified as Pontius Pilate, looks on with cold indifference, Christ's twisted, sculptural pose recalling classical statuary even as the surrounding brutality is rendered with unsparing realism. Painted for the collector and patron Vincenzo Giustiniani, likely in the years just before Caravaggio fled Rome in 1606, the work was later acquired for the Habsburg imperial collection and has been in Vienna since the early nineteenth century. A second, disputed painting of the same subject, possibly a later reworking from Caravaggio's Neapolitan years, is held at a museum in Prato, though its attribution remains debated among scholars.
