About this painting
No painting of this subject appears in Jacques-Louis David's catalogue, and biblical narrative scenes of this kind were never part of his output. The best-known Western treatment of the apostle Thomas probing Christ's wound to confirm the Resurrection is Caravaggio's The Incredulity of Saint Thomas, painted around 1601-02 and now in the Sanssouci picture gallery in Potsdam, though the subject was also painted by several Baroque artists, including Rubens. Whichever version this print reproduces, it belongs to an early Baroque tradition of religious drama entirely outside David's Neoclassical, largely secular subject matter.
