About this painting
This devotional subject, showing the infant Christ and his cousin John the Baptist together with the Virgin Mary and Saint Elizabeth, belongs to a long Renaissance and Baroque tradition practiced by artists such as Raphael, Andrea del Sarto, and Rubens, none of it reflected in Jacques-Louis David's own output. David's religious paintings were limited to a very small number of early academic works, and this softly devotional grouping is stylistically and thematically foreign to his Neoclassical, largely secular career. No specific alternate artist could be confirmed for this particular print, but attribution to David is highly doubtful.
