About this painting
Among the Sierra Nevada, California is a large oil painting Albert Bierstadt completed in his Rome studio in the winter of 1867-68, four years after his 1863 trip to the Sierra Nevada with writer Fitz Hugh Ludlow. It depicts a still alpine lake ringed by jagged, sunlit peaks, with elk and waterfowl at the water's edge, composed as an idealized synthesis of the range rather than a single real vista. Bierstadt toured the painting through London, Berlin, Paris, Moscow, and St. Petersburg to promote American scenery abroad, and it now hangs in the Smithsonian American Art Museum after an extensive, nearly 600-hour conservation effort.
