As a rule of thumb, wall art should span roughly two-thirds the width of the furniture it hangs above (for example, over a 6 ft sofa, look for a piece 4-5 ft wide, or a grouped arrangement that adds up to that width).

About this painting
Spring Flood (1931) is an oil on canvas, an unusual medium choice for Burchfield, who worked primarily in watercolor, depicting the seasonal overflow of a waterway inundating the surrounding land. The subject let him explore a more turbulent, unsettled side of spring's arrival rather than its gentler renewal. The painting entered the collection of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco in 1979 as a gift from Mr. and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller 3rd, and reflects a recurring theme in Burchfield's work of the early 1930s: nature treated not as picturesque backdrop but as an active, sometimes menacing force reshaping the landscape around it.
