About this painting
Degas painted dancers gripping the practice barre throughout the 1870s and 1880s, most famously in the Metropolitan Museum's Dancers Practicing at the Barre (1877); ‘Dancers at the Bar’ likely refers to a closely related composition on the same theme rather than to that particular canvas. Across this group he used the barre as a fixed compositional anchor against which he could set dancers' bodies at contrasting, often awkward angles, treating the discipline of ballet training as seriously as its performances. The exact source painting for this title could not be independently confirmed.
