About this painting
This 1937 portrait shows Picasso's lover and muse Dora Maar seated in a chair, dressed elegantly with an art-deco jacket and vividly painted red fingernails. Rendered in bright, jarring colors and angular Cubist-Surrealist fragmentation that fuses profile and frontal views of her face, the work reflects both her striking presence and the anxieties of the interwar period. It is held in the Musée Picasso, Paris.
