About this painting
A half-length Christ Carrying the Cross, dated to around 1490 and attributed to Sandro Botticelli, shows Christ in a vivid pink robe bent beneath the weight of the cross, restrained by a rope held by a hooded tormentor, against a glimpse of Jerusalem's architecture. The composition belongs to the devotional half-length format Botticelli favored later in his career, when his output increasingly turned from mythological subjects toward intensely emotional religious imagery. The work is associated with the Beaverbrook Art Gallery in Fredericton, Canada, in image-archive records, but this could not be confirmed against a primary museum catalog source, so the attribution and location should be treated as provisional.
