- Small / desk & shelf scale (around 12x24 to 16x24 inch): Great above a desk, nightstand, or as part of a gallery wall grouping with other pieces.

As a rule of thumb, wall art should span roughly two-thirds the width of the furniture it hangs above (for example, over a 6 ft sofa, look for a piece 4-5 ft wide, or a grouped arrangement that adds up to that width).

About this painting
The Story of Virginia, a tempera panel likely painted between 1500 and 1504, tells the ancient Roman legend of Virginia in a continuous narrative across a single wide panel: her assault at the order of the corrupt magistrate Appius Claudius, her public condemnation, and her father's killing of her to preserve her honor, an act that sparked a plebeian revolt. It was conceived as a pendant to Botticelli's Story of Lucretia, both cautionary tales of virtue and violated honor likely made for a Florentine household on the occasion of a marriage. The panel is now held by the Accademia Carrara in Bergamo, and its agitated, densely peopled classical architecture reflects Botticelli's late, more expressive narrative style.
